Aston Martin's Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack has warned the team needs to "get our act together" after a Canadian GP riddled with incidents. The Silverstone-based team have seemingly got on top of the battery vibration issue plaguing the start of their season, but more problems arose in Montreal.
Turning their attention to performance, even if they are putting off major upgrades until later on in the year, things initially looked more promising for Aston in Canada. Fernando Alonso was only 0.3s off Haas' Esteban Ocon and Williams' Alex Albon during Qualifying's Q1, and was as high as P10 on soft tyres upon the start of Sunday's Grand Prix.
The Spaniard fell back, however, and after just 23 laps, his race was over due to a broken seat giving him too much pain to carry on. The two-time world champion has already had to retire twice before this season, at the Australian GP opener and the Chinese GP, where he experienced excessive pain due to Aston's power unit vibrations.

Speaking after the Canadian GP, Alonso explained why he had to "stop the pain" in Montreal. He said: "Yeah, we had this seat issue where I feel more and more uncomfortable with the laps, the position doesn’t feel the right one, and we were obviously out of the points, quite far from the points, and no threat of rain anymore.
“So, yeah, we decided to stop the pain. We tried to modify a few things last night, didn’t work, so we’ll try to make a new one for Monaco.”
Aston Martin boss Krack has broken down Alonso's issue further, revealing that the Spaniard has been racing with the seat pain for a while, but never to a level where he had to stop before. Krack said: "He has been uncomfortable for a while; never to the point where it was really like a showstopper.
“But you know it’s like a pressure point, where you feel it gets worse and worse, and I think we need to reconsider a little bit the positioning. You try, with these cars, to be as low as you can, and, when you look at how the drivers used to sit over the last few years, it goes more and more and more into a lying position, and we need to check whether we have done a step too far, but it’s something we need to check.”

On the other side of the garage, Lance Stroll did manage to finish the race, but was second last of the drivers to cross the line at his home race in Canada, finishing four laps down in P15. Stroll also did not manage to escape Aston Martin's operational errors during the weekend, after a €7,500 fine was dished out for the team for releasing the Canadian in an unsafe condition in Qualifying. Aston had also been fined €5,000 for an unsafe release of Alonso.
Speaking on Aston's messy weekend, Krack said: "Not so nice, as you can imagine. "Obviously, one is independent of the other, so you can have the car performance that is not where we want it to be, but that is independent of getting your act together.
“We have done better in the past, and we will do better in the future, but we had a few glitches this weekend that we need to get better at. [There was] the wheel cover that Lance lost, and we also had to start from the pit lane in the Sprint race. That is obviously not ideal, and we will have to regroup and work on these issues so that they do not happen again.”
