It was recently revealed that Max Verstappen had secretly tested a Ferrari 296 GT3 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, causing the F1 rumour mill to work overtime. What is the current state of affairs, GPblog lays it all out for you.
A certain fellow by the name of "Franz Hermann" - Max Verstappen -, showed up during the third round of the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS), to do a few test and setup laps officially. Nevertheless speculation was rife, as the world wondered if Verstappen would be doing a full NLS race weekend, or even participating in the legendary 24 hours of Nurburgring.
For the test itself the reigning world champion was more than ready as his run was prepared by GT3 specialists from Emil Frey Racing and tyre experts from Michelin. The Swiss racing team knows the Ferrari 296 GT3 very well because they participate in the GT World Challenge Sprint Series. All signs pointed to the Dutchman wanting to seriously measure himself against the GT3 field.

Several rumors suggest that Verstappen wants to race in a GT3 race on the Nordschleife later this year.

Is a switch to the NLS class likely for Verstappen?

As it is known, a permit is needed to race around the Nordschleife, one of the most - notoriously - difficult and dangerous tracks in the world. However, as AMuS has reported, Verstappen could be dispensed a special permit which would allow him to part take in an official race at the German track.
Should that route not be taken by Verstappen then he would have to participate in a couple of lower class events, do a practical and theoretical test, and only then would he be able to measure himself up against the GT3 powerhouses at the Nordschleife.
There's still enough time for Verstappen to participate in the 24-hour long race, but whether Red Bull allow him to take part in it, that's an entirely different matter.
