F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has stated that he wouldn’t feel comfortable in George Russell’s position, suggesting the Briton could easily lose his seat if Max Verstappen becomes available.
It’s no secret that Toto Wolff is a great admirer of Max Verstappen. The Mercedes team boss has stated on multiple occasions that he would love to bring the four-time world champion to the Silver Arrows. So far, that move hasn’t materialised. However, a contract extension for George Russell has also yet to be announced.
‘’Well, I wouldn’t be comfortable if I were Russell because Antonelli is not going anywhere. So, there’s a seat,” the Canadian told a betting site.

Will Verstappen still move to Mercedes?

‘’One race does not make a difference. Mercedes know the driver, they know how quick Russell is, how he works with developing the car or not. Just having one win does not really affect the thought process about who you want in your car. It’s a long-term project and they know exactly what Russell is worth to the team.”
Last time out at the Canadian Grand Prix, George Russell managed to keep Max Verstappen at bay to take his first victory of the 2025 season. Despite the rumours, the Brit has performed well with Mercedes and has scored 136 points so far this season.

In that sense, Russell can consider himself fortunate, as Max Verstappen will remain with Red Bull Racing through 2026. As GPblog previously revealed, the Dutchman will not activate his exit clause, simply because there is no better alternative than Red Bull at the moment. While many expect Mercedes' new engine to be a game-changer in 2026, nothing is certain.
So, it appears George Russell can breathe a sigh of relief. He is expected to remain with Mercedes in 2026, alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli. While neither driver has signed a new contract yet, announcements are anticipated shortly.
