Toto Wolff's love for motorsport all began with a trip to the Netherlands, the Mercedes team principal he revealed ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.
Wolff has since become a staple in Formula 1. The team principal and CEO of Mercedes won every constructors' championship from 2014 until 2021, and Lewis Hamilton won six, while Nico Rosberg won a single drivers' title under his management of the team.
According to Wolff, his passion for motorsport all started when he took a trip with his friends to Amsterdam.
"We passed by the Nürburgring on the way back. A good friend of mine was competing in the German Formula 3 championship, which was taking place there at the time. I was fascinated by the atmosphere, the cars, and the drivers. I decided: this is what I want to do."
Wolff returns this weekend to the circuit where it all began for him in Austria. "I used to work at the Red Bull Ring. It always felt like a second home. I was trying to make a living and finance my own racing career. The best moment of the day was always when, at the end of the day, after everyone had gone home, I could test drive the cars."

Wolff stayed at 'farmhouse near the track'

Now the Austrian is also an investor and has an estimated wealth of 1.5 billion euros. Yet, things did not always go smoothly for Wolff. He explained that he used to have little money, and travelling from Vienna to the circuit was not always easy.
"I would stay at a farmhouse near the circuit when I had to work. The people there were incredibly kind and hospitable. At that time, I drove my SEAT Ibiza back and forth between Vienna and the circuit. But even the fuel was barely affordable," he explained.
