After Verstappen has completed his final flying lap during the second part of the SQ2 session, his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase told him to slowly return to the pit lane.
However, Verstappen had something else in mind, and asked whether is there someone who he can still help. Lambiase said Alonso was behind, but explained the Dutchman can just let him past.
Verstappen slowed down, and then accelerated at the exactly the right moment for the Aston Martin driver, giving him an important slipstream.
This proved to be crucial, as Alonso as a result managed to outqualify Nico Hulkenberg by 0.084 seconds, and Isack Hadjar by 0.007 seconds, earning him a place in SQ3. Watch the moment

Afterwards, Alonso thanked the Dutchman for giving him helping hand. After Sprint Qualifying concluded, he hugged the Dutchman, and the two spent some time talking and laughing together.
In the Sprint however, Alonso did not score any points, after he made contact with Liam Lawson and he ended up in the barrier. For the incident, the New Zealander received a five-second time penalty by the stewards for causing a collision. Verstappen also finished outside of the points on Saturday, after a mistake by the Red Bull pit crew led to a 10-second penalty.
The Spaniard also didn't score points during Sunday's Grand Prix. He also talked at length about
whether it will be possible for him to score points this season at all.
