Max Verstappen stopped early in the session with an electrical problem. Unfortunately for him and Red Bull, he was unable to get back onto the track as team mate Daniel Ricciardo topped the timesheets.
Verstappen suffered the issue on his out lap, and after initial worries that it was an engine problem, Red Bull released that it was only an electrical problem within the engine.
Verstappen pushed his car back into the pits, where he stayed for the rest of the session.
Horner told Sky Sports after the session: “It’s frustrating for Max, we’ve had an issue with one of the auxiliary parts in the top end of the engine, which is unfortunately just one of those things.
“The guys understood what it is, but unfortunately it was too long a change to get the car running in the session, which is desperately frustrating.
“At least they’ve identified the problem, so hopefully it can be fixed fairly shortly”.
Verstappen should be back out for FP2, which you can follow on a GPBlog livestream this afternoon.
The session starts at 4pm and Verstappen will hope to follow Ricciardo’s form in the first session, where he had a gap of three tenths to second place Valtteri Bottas.
