Honda factory set to continue: '2022 Red Bull engine assembled in Japan'

Although Honda is formally leaving Formula 1 after this season, the engines will still be built in Japan. Red Bull Racing are already taking over many of the staff, but now it has also been announced that the engines will come from Japan next year.

"Yes, Red Bull and Honda have been working on that project, and then how to proceed in that transition for next year," explains Honda technical director Toyoharu Tanabe to Autosport When asked about Red Bull's plans. Although they are building a factory in Milton Keynes, there will still be engines coming from Sakura next year.

That's where Honda's factory is located where the engines are now made. Christian Horner also confirmed this to the same medium. "We’re just finalising the detail of that. Obviously as we gear ourselves up within Red Bull Powertrains, ’22 will be a transitionary year". Together with Honda, Red Bull will prepare everything to transfer operations to Milton Keynes in 2022.

"So we’re working with Honda to have a soft landing where the engines will be continued to be assembled in Sakura in 2022, before that process is being taken on in our new facility in time for 2023," Horner concluded.
