Hamilton's hopes of securing a first pole position as a Ferrari driver were dashed in the closing moments of Q3, with Lando Norris edging him by just 0.012s to snatch the top spot.

The decisive moment came as Oscar Piastri started his final flying lap, only to encounter the Ferrari on the racing line approaching Turn 1. The Australian was forced to back out of the attempt, ultimately finishing fifth, nearly half a second behind his McLaren teammate.

Speaking after qualifying, Hamilton explained that he was only informed about the approaching car when it was already at the apex, insisting he had no idea it was coming.

He added that he believed everyone else was already done with their laps, as he was the first driver to leave the pit lane, with Leclerc the last car he was aware of behind him. Hamilton also stressed that the session had been clean up until that point and insisted the incident was entirely unintentional.

Kimi Antonelli has joined Hamilton on the list of drivers facing post-qualifying investigations, with the Mercedes driver alleged to have breached yellow-flag regulations during his final Q3 attempt.

The incident came after Max Verstappen spun at the final corner, prompting yellow flags that also compromised George Russell's last flying lap. Antonelli nevertheless improved to fourth on the grid, while his teammate was forced to settle for seventh.

The Italian has been called to the stewards at 18:15 local time, where he will give his account before a decision is made on the alleged infringement.
