Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has praised Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc for their "professional" battle, which he admits could have admittedly made the team look "completely stupid" at the Chinese GP.
Leclerc and Hamilton routinely exchanged the final podium spot throughout the race in Shanghai, overtaking in unorthodox places across several laps, and seemingly having all the fun in the world while doing so.
What was also noticeable during the Grand Prix was the lack of team orders coming from the Scuderia, with Vasseur arguing the best way to "build up a team" was through such hard battling.

Hamilton and Leclerc avoided looking 'completely stupid,' says Vasseur

Speaking to media, including GPblog, Vasseur was asked on that lack of team orders to either Leclerc or Hamilton, who were reporting "good fun" on the team radio.
Vasseur said: "Yeah, huge respect for both of them, they are professional and I think it makes sense in this situation to let them race.
"I know perfectly that I can also look completely stupid half an hour later, but at the end of the day I think it's also the best way to build up a team.
“And we need to have this kind of emulation into the team to improve.
“And as long as it's done like it was done today, I've heard a couple of times on the radio, they told us that they had good fun. But I don't want to freeze the position."
Vasseur was then asked on Mercedes' performance, with the Ferrari boss admitting his team are still "far away" from the 2026 favourites, who have scored two one-two wins in a row, but that the Scuderia are nonetheless "closing the gap."
“Yes, at the beginning we were fighting with the Merc as long as we [within] one second and we can have extra boost and so on, we are able to keep the pace but as soon as they are making the one second gap it's much more difficult.
"We know that we have a deficit of performance, mainly in the straight line, but we have to work on it. We are improving because we were eight tenths off in Melbourne, six tenths on Friday, four tenths on Saturday.
"Step by step we are understanding a bit more the situation and closing the gap. But they are still far away. It's not just about the engine. It's that we have to work everywhere. We have to improve on the chassis and the tires, like always."

Leclerc hits back at ‘artificial’ 2026 F1 claims after epic Hamilton battle

With so much hinging on battery levels and deployment in F1 2026, racing has had something of a 'yo-yo' effect in terms of overtaking, with some drivers, including Max Verstappen, likening the new rules to something out of 'Mario Kart.'
Leclerc, however, has a slightly different view after his thrilling battle wit Hamilton, instead arguing the new rules have made the 2026 cars "actually quite fun" in race trim.
