We all knew that the halo somewhat impedes the view of the drivers, but this Friday night all fans around the world suddenly realized that the halo also completely ruins the onboard camera.
The onboard camera, positioned just above of the driver for the mandatory overhead shot, is complemented by the over-the-shoulder shot, which shows the drivers' helmet and gives a better perspective of what he sees. The view of the people watching is heavily impeded by the halo, causing fans and teams to express their criticism.
"It annoys me that almost fifty percent of my screen is black," Force India COO Otmar Szafnauer said on the over-the-shoulder camera. The majority of the paddock still thinks that the overhead shot is the best one available and that the view is not blocked too much by the halo.
Liberty Media has acknowledged that the onboard cameras are a problem, but the problem is in the regulation.
"Participants have to be aware by June 30th of the previous season what changes have to be made for the installation of onboard cameras or transponders," the official regulation states.
That basically means that no changes in camera-positions or angles can be made until next season. And thát means that us consumers, well, we'll just have to suck it up and live with it.
