Red Bull team boss has said that it's "impossible" for the teams to agree on new regulations for 2021, and therefore he thinks that the FIA and Liberty Media should act strongly and make tough decisions themselves.
It's no secret that the paddock is rarely on the same page. The latest example of the lack of unity between the teams was when
Ferrari broke a gentleman's agreement in the F1 among the teams; they hired a former FIA-employee.
"We did nothing wrong," Ferrari boss
Maurizio Arrivabene said,
"we respected the Swiss hall when we hired Laurent [Mekies]." "In my opinion, [Mekies] is joining the team in seven or eight months, and it's not a very big deal."
Christian Horner responded immediately by saying:
"For me, it is a big deal."
"We have the Strategy Group, where the teams, the FOM and the FIA come together."
"We discussed Marcin [Budkowski going from the FIA to Renault] because there was great unrest about a key FIA figure going to a team. Renault solved it with an extended gardening leave, but all the teams still found it unacceptable."
"Some people wanted the leave to be three years, but we finally settled on twelve months; and that discussion was six weeks ago!"
"As a group, we agreed on something, and that has now been completely disregarded, so what's the point of those meetings then?"
Horner then tackled the issue of the next set of regulations, which will go into effect from 2021 on. There's been a lot of discussing and disagreement between the teams already, and Horner knows that this is something that won't change.
"Trying to get teams that all have different objectives to get a consensus on something is impossible," he stated.
"I think Liberty and the FIA are the ones that need to be on the same page and need to figure out what direction they want this sport to go, what the financial distribution is, and just lay it out to the teams."
Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, agreed with his Red Bull colleague;
"It's clear that the current way of making the rules isn't very effective." "There's just too many different opinions and agendas, and we need to sort this out before 2021 for the best interests of the sport."
