George Russell continues to search for answers as he tries to understand why he is suffering from a significant straight-line performance deficit compared to his Mercedes teammate.
The Briton qualified fourth, a position that will become third following Lando Norris' penalty, after finishing half a second behind his teammate, who will start from pole for the sixth time this season in tomorrow's race.
Speaking to GPblog among other media after qualifying, Russell revealed that Mercedes initially believed the issue stemmed from the brakes before later suspecting his driving style and throttle application. However, he explained that the team is now convinced neither is responsible and believes there is a more significant underlying problem affecting the car.
"Yesterday I was losing 8 tenths in the straights, today I'm losing 4 tenths. It's a step in the right direction, but you know, we saw this from Silverstone, we thought we found a problem, we thought it was something with the brakes, it wasn't the brakes.
"Then we thought it was my driving style, the throttle, and I convinced myself that it was something in me with the driving style. Now we're very confident it's not the driving style and that there's a serious issue at play here. The team are working so hard to resolve it, but you know, every lap I do when I see I'm down anywhere from two tenths to six tenths in the straights, it's pretty infuriating."

Russell admitted he was pleased with his qualifying lap and believes it was strong enough to challenge for a place on the front row. However, he explained that Mercedes' attention over the past day and a half has been almost entirely devoted to investigating the car's straight-line performance issues rather than focusing on setup or tyre optimisation.
"I felt very, very happy and content with my lap to be honest. As a minimum, it would have been fighting you for the front row. This my whole focus for the last 36 hours has been on straight line speed. It hasn't been focused on the setup, the tyres or anything because we're all trying to solve what is going on and even my last lap for some reason I lost another tenth and a half to myself just on the straight.
"You're watching on your lap your steering wheel is losing speed when you're full straight in the straight. There you feel powerless. So we don't know what's going on. I don't think it's the power unit, to be honest. But there's something slowing us down in the straights. As I said, the team are really, really on it now to try and solve it."
Finally, Russell explained that Mercedes' analysis had helped pinpoint where the time loss was occurring, making it easier to understand the scale of the issue despite the frustration of seeing such a large gap on the timing screens.

"My engineers did a really good job of highlighting where I'm losing and when I cross the line you see you're half a second down, you feel like, it feels pretty rubbish but when you realize more than 75% of that's coming from the power unit, you feel a bit better."

Antonelli celebrates sixth pole but warns of Verstappen threat off the line

The championship leader celebrated another standout qualifying performance after claiming his sixth pole position of the season at Spa. The Italian highlighted how difficult the session had been due to the constantly evolving track conditions, but explained that the team managed to make steady progress throughout qualifying, allowing him to put together the fastest lap when it mattered most.
Despite securing pole position, Antonelli stressed that the real challenge lies ahead in Sunday's race, with Max Verstappen lining up alongside him on the front row after Red Bull's slipstream strategy narrowly fell short of delivering pole. The Mercedes driver underlined the importance of making a strong getaway and leading into the opening sequence of corners, while also expressing satisfaction with his final lap, particularly the gains made through the middle sector.

Looking ahead to the Grand Prix, Antonelli expects tyre degradation to play a decisive role and believes race pace and tyre management will be crucial in the fight for victory. His priority will be to maximise the car's performance over the full race distance and convert pole position into another strong result.
