From 'GP' to 'Bono': A list of F1 race engineers

During an F1 broadcast, hearing the communication between a driver and an engineer is essential nowadays. Not only the race engineers are able to talk to the drivers, give them some information about what's going on while the drivers can also share their thoughts, they often provide responses and jokes the fans can also enjoy. GPblog list you the current race engineer of every Formula 1 driver.

The two most well-known race engineers at the moment in the world of Formula 1 are 'GP' Gianpiero Lambiase and 'Bono' Peter Bonnington. These two engineers currently help the protagonists of the 2021 world championship battle, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Both are highly valued within their teams. Both engineers were promoted to become head of race engineerings as well. These two pairs have also spent the most seasons together, although Hamilton and Bono's partnership will end once the British driver leaves for Ferrari. The Mercedes duo have been working together for 11 years, the Red Bull duo have been talking over the radio for 9 years.

Another well-known person among fans, Xavier Marcos, who was working with Charles Leclerc, has been replaced this season. The Monegasque driver's current race engineer is Bryan Bozzi. There have been other changes completes during the 2024 season. Steven Petrik became Valtteri Bottas' race engineer early on, something that the Finnish driver did not expect, while ahead of the Italian GP, Yuki Tsunoda also got a new race engineer, as Mattia Spini got promoted. Tsunoda therefore now works with Ernesto Desiderio. Gaetan Jago however is now teamed up with Franco Colapinto, after Logan Sargeant was substituted out by James Vowles.

From being a race engineer, one can also climb up the ladder to become team principal. For example, current McLaren team principal, Andrea Stella, was previously Kimi Räikkönen's and Fernando Alonso's race engineer at Ferrari.
