Winter testing has been held in Barcelona for the past 10 years, apart from in 2014 when the test was moved to Bahrain. AlphaTauri team boss, Franz Tost, believes that Bahrain would be more suitable for testing and hopes that it will be held in the Middle East in the future.
“We were lucky with the weather this year. I was also here in Barcelona a few years ago with the winter test and then we had snow and it rained a lot. My personal opinion is that a winter test is Abu Dhabi or Bahrain makes more sense," said the AlphaTauri team boss during an interview with GPblog.com, among others .
“In those countries, we almost always have good weather and we also drive under the same conditions as in a race. If the tires work in Barcelona in the winter, it does not mean that they also work in Australia, Bahrain, Vietnam or other places, because the temperature is too low,” the Austrian explains.
“We had a lot of wind problems this year in Barcelona, where it is difficult to test and the temperature drops quickly after two in the afternoon. In terms of circumstances, a test in Bahrain is, therefore, more logical, but you also have to take into account circumstances such as logistics. It is easier and cheaper to bring the parts to Barcelona from Italy or England."
Many have been critical of holding testing at the Circuit de Catalunya and it will be interesting to see if the FIA make the decision to move it to a more suitable location.
