F1 expert Gary Anderson believes McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri's and Lando Norris' errors have brought Max Verstappen back into play for the World Championship. It would have seemed preposterous a few races ago but now he certainly has a chance.
- Gary Anderson"It would have seemed preposterous a few races ago but now he certainly has a chance," Anderson stated in his analysis for The Telegraph.
With his win in Baku, Norris' P7 and Piastri's DNF, Verstappen cut the gap in the
Drivers' Standings by 25 points, after reducing it by 10 points following his victory in Monza. Overall, in the past two race weekends, the Dutchman has taken a chunk of 35 points out of the lead Piastri held after the Dutch Grand Prix.
Whilst dismissing – though not entirely – the chances that McLaren will experience another race weekend like the one they had in Azerbaijan, the Irishman does see a scenario where Verstappen could put Piastri and Norris under pressure.
"If Verstappen wins the next two rounds and Norris and Piastri start mixing it with the Mercedes or Ferrari cars then the gap will reduce dramatically."
Should McLaren mitigate the damage in the next two Grands Prix, though, they'd still be at risk, Anderson believes.
"Verstappen is (questionably) the best driver on the grid and while so many others made mistakes in Baku in tough conditions, he was flawless.
"The McLaren drivers should certainly be feeling the heat from the Dutchman as well as each other, especially given the breakthrough the team seem to have made with their car since Zandvoort," alluding to Red Bull's recent upturn in form.
Although some tracks, such as Singapore, may not suit the RB21, the analyst thinks Red Bull will have found a setup that could make Verstappen feel comfortable enough to push and maximise his result.
"Give him even half a chance and he seems to take it. McLaren simply cannot afford to keep leaking points to him if they want a first drivers’ title since 2008," Anderson concludes with a warning.
