Confirmed: Fernando Alonso will leave F1 before 2021

Whether by mistake or on purpose, Fernando Alonso has announced he will be leaving F1 before the 2021 season. In an interview on Grand prix.com, the Spaniard is asked about his thoughts on the 2021 tyre regulations.

He lets slip that he will not be racing in F1 post-2020. The McLaren driver said: “I don’t know and I don’t really care, I will not be here in 2021.

It remains unclear if Alonso is leaving at the end of this season, or inside the next two. The Le Mans winner will want to race the Indy500 to give him a chance of winning the triple crown.

If he was to race into the 2021 season, he would be ticking over into his 40’s. At least we know he’s made a decision about it!
