From 2026, Audi will join Formula 1. The German manufacturer will merge with Sauber, currently called Alfa Romeo. Ambitions are high within the team, and there is therefore much speculation about potential drivers. Sauber's general manager Alessandro Alunni Bravi does see Fernando Alonso as a potential driver for the team, despite his age.
On Wednesday morning, the Alfa Romeo team announced that they have appointed James Key as technical director. He will replace Jan Moncheaux at the Swiss racing stable. Slowly we see the first traces of the ambitions of the team that will become Audi in 2026.

'Even though he's 45'

So the plans are big at Audi, and according to Bravi, Fernando Alonso is thus a good option for 2026, he told Mundo Deportivo: "I would sign Fernando every time, even if he was 45 or older. I got to know him well at McLaren when I was manager of Stoffel Vandoorne, who was his team-mate. I was able to see first-hand the work he can do on a day-to-day basis as a driver, his ability, and his great determination."
