Jenson Button issued a simple response to Ferrari president John Elkann’s scathing comments about drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc following the team’s double DNF in Brazil.
“We definitely have drivers who need to focus on driving and talk less,” said Elkann at an Olympics sponsorship event in Rome.
He added: “The mechanics with the pit stops and the engineers are doing a great job to improve the car throughout the year. There are many areas that still need to get better, and we certainly need drivers who think not of themselves, but of Ferrari.”
Hamilton and Leclerc took to social media to issue their own reflections on the team’s dismal result, which saw them drop to P4 in the constructors championship behind rivals Mercedes and Red Bull Racing.

World champion responds

Elkann’s comments have sparked discussion throughout the Formula One world and Button gave a simple response in the comments of Sky Sports F1’s Instagram post.
The Sky Sports F1 pundit replied: “Maybe John should lead by example.”
The comment soon gained traction as many fans came out in force to celebrate Button’s comment.

One fan said: “Grande Jenson, absolutely right.”
“My first thought, but means just a tad more from a WDC,” said another.
A different fan said: “Exactly this… how unprofessional of him to come out and say this. Says it all about the culture in that team.”
Another fan simply put: “Jenson you legend.”
While one person even joked: “Get you in the seat, maybe…”

Elkann’s comments come as Ferrari seek their first win in the 2025 season. The Scuderia is on a long winless drought dating back to the 2024 Mexico GP, which was won by the departed Carlos Sainz.
Elkann has served as Ferrari chairperson since 2018, replacing Sergio Marchionne who after he passed away due to ill health.
