Gabriel Bortoleto rammed the side of Lance Stroll at Turn 1. A bit further ahead, Liam Lawson collided into Oscar Piastri's car. The bits and pieces resulting from the crashes posed a puncture risk for all remaining drivers, which were down to 18 following Bortoleto's and Stroll's retirements, a direct consequence of their crash.
Under Virtual Safety Car conditions the marshals had to make a break for it. After cleaning up the debris, and start making their way back behind the barriers, the F1 cars approached Turn 1. In that moment all the marshals started running away from the scene.
Recently in Mexico, Liam Lawson faced a similar situation, where he had to avoid two marshals, although the New Zealander's incident took place on a live track, whereas here, the field was under VSC conditions and there were double yellows being waved at the corner.
