Alex Dunne made his debut on a Formula 1 race weekend in first practice ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix. The Irish driver performed admirably to set the fourth-quickest time, just one-tenth of a second behind teammate Oscar Piastri.
Dunne looked composed behind the wheel and built up speed over the one hour of running under the spotlight on a race weekend.
Dunne was very impressive, and the McLaren junior is also in contention to win the Formula 2 title in his rookie year.
The Irish driver told GPBlog and others at the Red Bull Ring that following Lewis Hamilton out of the pit lane made the session even more special.
Dunne appreciated the full grandstands
Alex Dunne set the fourth quickest time in FP1
He said: "It was pretty cool. I think at the beginning of the session when I was queued up at the end of the pit lane waiting for the light to go green, and I was sat there behind Lewis Hamilton.
"That was pretty cool. It was very, very special for me. I think to see all the fans in F2, a lot of the fans aren't there when we're driving. So to see all the grandstands fans full while I was on track was very, very cool. And it was an extremely special moment for me and one that I remember forever."
