Franco Colapinto had five Grand Prix races to prove himself at Alpine. Has it been enough so far to earn a seat for race number six in Great Britain? In the paddock in Austria, it has become clear that
Colapinto doesn't need to worry about his seat. The Argentinian's performances have apparently convinced Flavio Briatore of his
qualities, as Colapinto will drive for Alpine again in Silverstone. The British Grand Prix will be his sixth race for Alpine.
However, not everything has been going smoothly for
Colapinto. The Alpine driver experienced some incidents and
crashed hard during his first event of the year at Imola. Afterwards, Colapinto stepped up, especially in Canada, and he showed some of his pure speed for the first time.
The pressure on Colapinto
In Austria, GPblog asked him about the pressure that
came with racing for Alpine. ‘’No, just normal like every F1 race. That's what
we live with and what comes with it. The fact that I feel increasingly better in the
car is positive for me. That makes me a bit more relaxed and happy. I understand
things now better than before, so I am definitely happy to be here. It's an
amazing circuit. I'm really looking forward to racing here.’’
Colapinto was initially appointed as Alpine's reserve
driver, but it was a public secret that at some point, Colapinto would take over
the seat from Jack Doohan. After six races, that was indeed the case and
Colapinto had to debut for Alpine in Imola without a lot of preparation.
‘’That's part of this sport. There is a lot of talk. As a team, we need to continue working well so that
I understand the car better and we work in the right direction. There's still a
long way to go when you don't have tests. In free practices, you just
don't have much time to make adjustments. So, you understand little about the car and
don't have a car that suits your driving style yet. It all takes time.’’
