Doornbos analyses Bottas' mistake: 'Then 600 metres is a very long time'

The Hungarian Grand Prix was dominated by the first corner, in which Valtteri Bottas made a mistake, driving several drivers off the track. Robert Doornbos explains on Ziggo Sport what the Finn did wrong.

"He has a bad start. That means he starts from second gear. You see that more often in the rain, because they want to avoid wheelspin," the analyst explained. "Then you hope you have the perfect get away, but he didn't have that. His teammate Hamilton and Verstappen did, as did the rest. Then 600 metres is a very long time to the first corner."

Bottas therefore saw several cars drive past him, including Lando Norris. "He caught up with Bottas and slid right in front of him. He's allowed to do that. What Bottas should have done instinctively then was get out of the slipstream." However, the Finnish driver forgot to do that, leaving the damage incalculable. "Then you are a passenger and so is Lando in the end."

Max Verstappen also suffered damage from Bottas' mistake and drove the rest of the race with a damaged car. Despite this, he finished in ninth place.
