Nyck de Vries has fierce competition in his fight for a spot in Formula 1. The Formula E world champion has been linked to both Alfa Romeo and Williams in recent days, but he has a Chinese rival with a bag of money worth 30 million euros.

The opportunity for De Vries

The line-up for Formula 1 in 2022 is almost known, but there are still a few uncertainties. Valtteri Bottas has signed a contract with Alfa Romeo, but his teammate is still unknown. Antonio Giovinazzi is doing well this year, but has the problem that there is a lot of competition in the market.
Frederic Vasseur is reportedly in talks with Nyck de Vries, and Toto Wolff wants to promote the Dutchman into Formula 1, after his title with Mercedes in Formula E and his 2019 Formula 2 win. It is said that he has already signed a contract with Alfa, but Williams is also an option.

Chinese money for Williams

The Spanish Marca reports that Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott have been named as successors to Giovinazzi, but that one name stands out. That is the current number two in the standings for the Formula 2 championship, Guanyu Zhou. According to the Spanish medium, the Chinese would bring as much as 30 million euros in sponsorship money.
De Vries is mentioned by Marca as a candidate for Williams, together with Alexander Albon. At Williams, the question is whether Nicholas Latifi will be retained. If that is the case there is only room for one other driver. Jost Capito, the Williams team boss, has indicated earlier that he doesn't need money from 'pay-drivers' anymore, and wants to choose for talent. Given the gap to Russell, Latifi does not seem the right driver to keep.
