Ferrari could make a very late decision on a power unit change for Charles Leclerc at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Leclerc suffered a heavy crash on lap two of the Italian Grand Prix, but kept running the same unit last time out in Madrid.
However, after the event, team principal Fred Vasseur identified Baku as ‘quite suitable’ for the change and the resulting penalty drop to the back of the grid.
GPblog reported at the time that Ferrari would further evaluate the unit before making a decision, and Vasseur confirmed as much while speaking to this outlet and others after a disappointing Thursday practice from the team.

Vasseur refuses to reveal Leclerc engine decision

However, he refused to announce any final decision, saying with a laugh: “I have clarity, but I will keep it from you, good try!”
On a similar line of questioning, he responded: “That was a way to ask the same question!”
Leclerc and Hamilton were 3rd and 4th and then 4th and 5th in Thursday’s practice sessions, but the gap to Mercedes and George Russell in particular was vast.
On race runs Ferrari were a second slower than Russell, and on softer tyres.

Yet Vasseur tried to play down concerns of an uncompetitive weekend.

Ferrari struggle for pace during Azerbaijan practice

He added: “We try to not pay too much attention to Friday. Friday is useless, so imagine the Thursday!
“Baku you never know, you can have a big surprise, I remember year one we were all expecting that the medium [tyre] goes and nothing happens.

“The second year it was the opposite, the strategy for sure if nothing happens it will be a one-stop, as it’s not that easy to overtake.”
He added on the practice sessions: “It was a strange session that we are very up and down.
“This morning was OK but certainly we are very up and down from one lap to the other, it’s quite difficult to find the right position between tows, but even for the tyres it’s very difficult.
“I think we also even saw with Max’s [Verstappen] strategy it’s a challenge that also the parameters of performance are making a bigger step for the track than [what] you've done on the engine.
“But for sure, we are not very pleased with the balance today, we have a lot of work to do tomorrow.”

Ferrari did have so much work to do that they broke curfew; however, the FIA confirmed it fell into one of their four permitted breaches for the season.
