Cadillac has another candidate in mind besides Herta to replace Bottas

Frederik Vesti could be one of the candidates to replace Valtteri Bottas at Cadillac for the 2027 Formula 1 season. GPblog understands that the Dane is under consideration if the American team decides not to continue with the experienced Finn. That gives Cadillac another potential successor, alongside Colton Herta.
Bottas’s future at Cadillac has become uncertain. Although the Finn signed a multi-year deal when he joined the American team, team principal Marcin Budkowski was unwilling to confirm during the race weekend in Austin that the current drivers would also race for the team in 2027. Under former team principal Graeme Lowdon, however, it was stated that Cadillac would continue with Bottas and Sergio Perez.
GPblog previously reported that Colton Herta is under consideration as a replacement for Bottas. The American is seen as a leading candidate to secure a full-time race seat next season. Cadillac executive Dan Towriss has since confirmed that Herta still has a chance of being promoted, although the former IndyCar driver must first secure his super licence.

Vesti also in the running for a Cadillac F1 seat

However, Herta is not the only driver in line for a possible promotion at Cadillac. GPblog understands that Frederik Vesti is also an interesting option should the team decide to look beyond Bottas. The 24-year-old Dane has the advantage of already having built a relationship with the American manufacturer.

Bottas’s position is under pressure because of his performances in Cadillac’s first Formula 1 season. Towriss acknowledged after the United States Grand Prix that the team had discussed Bottas’s pace at several races. The American expects Cadillac to provide more clarity on its driver line-up plans in the coming weeks.
Bottas previously said he was not particularly concerned about the rumours surrounding his future. The former Mercedes driver stressed that he knows where he stands contractually and expects to remain at Cadillac.

The link between Vesti and Cadillac

Vesti and Cadillac already have a connection. He has competed for Cadillac in IMSA for several seasons, driving for Cadillac Whelen, which is run by Action Express Racing. The Dane drives the No. 31 Cadillac V-Series.R in the GTP class, the top prototype category in the American endurance championship.
In 2026, Vesti shares the car with Jack Aitken and Earl Bamber in the endurance races. He also competed at Long Beach. His partnership with Cadillac will expand further next season: on 15 October, Cadillac announced that Vesti would step up to a full IMSA season in 2027. He will then form the No. 31’s full-time driver line-up with Aitken, while Bamber will remain involved in the endurance races.
