John Bennett won the Formula 2 Sprint Race at the Austrian Grand Prix after overtaking Sebastian Montoya on the final lap. After he was hit by Joshua Durksen on the opening lap, Nikola Tsolov finished ninth, outside of the points. However, should Rafael Camara receive a penalty for causing a collision, he could be promoted to eighth place and score a single point. For now, Gabriele Mini leads the Formula 2 drivers' standings by ten points after finishing fifth today.
As it happened
Sebastian Montoya started the sprint race from pole position, but the son of former
Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya immediately lost the lead to Bennett into Turn 1.
At Turn 3, the drivers were unable to avoid a multi-car collision, which also brought out the Safety Car. Ferrari junior Camara collided with Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak, who was then pushed into Oliver Goethe. Red Bull junior Tsolov was also caught up in the incident, leaving him in a difficult position to score points.
Bennett held the lead after the restart. Mini lost two positions to Camara and Alpine's Alex Dunne, while Tsolov gained a total of three positions. Then, on Lap 8, Montoya reclaimed the lead from Bennett, but was unable to build a gap to the British driver.
On Lap 21, Colton Herta's car stopped on track, nearly causing a big incident, but luckily, everyone behind could avoid the American. Herta's sprint coming to an end also caused a Virtual Safety Car.
Bennett could stay close to Montoya during the final stage of the sprint race, and on the final lap, he managed to overtake the Colombian. Rafael Villagomez completed the podium.
