Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas has explained the reason behind his drive-through penalty at the Miami GP. The Finn was noted for exceeding the 80km/h pit lane speed limit by 9.6km/h, and eventually finished last of those to cross the line in P18, two laps down on race winner Kimi Antonelli.
As revealed by the former Mercedes man, a "known issue" was what caused Bottas to exceed the speed limit, namely a faulty pit limiter button. Such a fault is hardly a surprise given it was only Cadillac's fourth-ever round in F1 - the American giant has performed admirably so far in 2026, ahead of established team Aston Martin amid the Silverstone-based team's reliability woes.
Speaking to media, including GPblog, about his drive-through penalty, Bottas put the pit limiter issue down to the sort of teething issues a brand-new F1 team is always going to encounter. He explained: “I pressed the pit limiter button, but apparently not hard enough.
“We’re still lacking a bit of feedback on some of the buttons, so another error we’re still working on. It’s been a known issue, we just haven’t got the new buttons yet so hopefully in the next race. But yeah, it’s one of the things that happens when you start as a new team.”

The 10-time Grand Prix winner was then asked whether reliability issues were playing into any frustrations with being at the back of the grid, with Aston Martin the only other team realistically close to Cadillac in terms of competition. Bottas responded: “It’s not frustration, this is what I signed up for.
“I knew it was going to be difficult times. It was a tough race. After the qualifying yesterday, I felt okay on the fresh tyre, but as soon as the tyre degrades, the pace was pretty bad, also compared to Checo [Perez]. So I need to have a look. I think we’re still struggling a bit with the quality of certain parts."
After the introduction of their first major upgrade package of the season, Bottas is hopeful the American team is heading in the right direction, looking ahead to another North American race at Montreal in two weeks' time.

He added: "There are a lot of hidden areas that we are improving. The pace sometimes seemed a bit better this weekend, sometimes not. But I think the upgrades worked. Not every part is the same that we put on the car, so there’s a bit of lack of consistency there but overall, it’s getting better and hopefully we are going to make another step in Montreal.”
"I think still our weakness is high to medium speed corners. Montreal is only low speed, medium speed, so hopefully we'll be a bit closer. It's a short lap as well, gaps are a little bit smaller, so yeah, looking forward to it."
