The unpredictability that the Baku City Circuit throws up has helped drivers smash all sorts of records throughout the weekend. We take a look at the record highlights!
He came New Zealand’s first Formula 1 points scorer for 42 years. He finished in 10th place to pick up a solitary point for Toro Rosso. The last Kiwi to score points was Chris Amon who came fifth in the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix.
He became the second driver from Monaco to score points in the whole of F1’s history. This takes a 68-year record. Louis Chiron was the sole driver until Sunday who achieved the feat in 1950. Leclerc finished three places lower than Chiron but still managed to score twice as many points!
Lance Stroll came 8th picking up 4 Championship points. This earns Williams’ first points of the season which now means all teams have scored points. The last time all teams scored points in 4 races was 2010! A sign of how much closer the racing is.
Mercedes Drivers
Valtteri Bottas struck a puncture in the closing stages of the Grand Prix which ended his 18-race streak of points finishes. How gutting!
Lewis Hamilton, however, made his record streak even longer making it 29 successive points finishes. The Brit also joins level with Michael Schumacher for winning 22 different Grands Prix. A record he can beat if he wins the French GP.
Ferrari
Sebastian Vettel started the race on pole for the third time in a row. That’s the first time Ferrari have started from the front three consecutive times this decade. The last time came in 2008 with Istanbul, Monaco and Montreal the tracks.
