Anticipation is building at Aston Martin around Honda’s power unit upgrades at the Dutch Grand Prix.
The Adrian Newey-led squad already made a giant leap last time out in Hungary when the legendary engineer delivered a chassis update which cut around two seconds of lap time from their deficit to the race leaders.
Aston started the season in disarray as the worst team along with newcomers Cadillac, but their performance at the Hungaroring struck fear into their rivals.
Next up is an engine upgrade in Zandvoort for Aston, and the man in charge of delivering it, Honda’s chief engineer Shintaro Orihara, isn’t dampening expectations.

Honda reveal extensive changes for Dutch Grand Prix

In a press release ahead of the event, he commented: “The Dutch Grand Prix is a significant milestone for Honda, as it's here that we're introducing our new power unit specification.
“It's the culmination of an intensive period of work at HRC Sakura, together with HRC UK and the Aston Martin team.”
He added: "Zandvoort is a sprint weekend, which means we'll only have one free practice session.
“This will present an additional challenge to complete the evaluation of our new package with so little track time, but it's a test we're looking forward to.

"In Hungary we saw a step forward with the new chassis. Now, with the new power unit specification already introduced, we expect to continue progressing together with the team for the rest of the season.”

Aston and Newey held off on rolling out minor upgrades, instead producing one bulk change for Hungary with startling results.
Honda are also doing the same, delivering not just one power unit modification, but a series of changes to improve performance in the Netherlands.

Aston Martin target another leap after Newey upgrade

Orihara earlier detailed: “We focus on improving engine performance to make combustion faster. So it's kind of a secret, but I can disclose a little bit…
“We changed the pre-chamber to make combustion faster, and we also changed the piston shape to get good combustion. Also, we modified some lubrication systems to reduce friction. So we had quite a big list to improve engine performance.
“We achieved our target, and I'm confident in what the HRC Sakura Factory guys achieved for the spec 2 engine. We are excited to bring the new spec engine to the Netherlands, and we will see where we are.”
All of this will come as music to the ears of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso who was facing another year of uncompetitive pain.

Yet he was never in doubt, as he explained in Hungary.

Alonso has 'zero doubts' over Aston Martin and Honda

"I think I have a pretty clear picture of the team, that we will fix all the problems,” he said.
“They take time, but I have no doubts, zero doubts, that Adrian will provide the best car on the grid sooner or later.

"As I said before, I would like to see the first step with this package, with the understanding after the first couple of races, and I think there’s going to be more to come next year, that’s for sure, and in the years to come.
"On the power unit, I have no doubt as well. I think it’s a matter of time before Honda fixes the issues, because it’s what they’ve been doing for the last 40 years of racing.
“We started on the back foot, yes. We are dealing with that process now and that pain on the weekends, but we are all working together to fix the issues. It’s just how soon the car will be competitive. That’s the question mark."
