Argentina's foreign minister fires back at Lando Norris over Colapinto

After the first Safety Car restart of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Colapinto locked up into Turn 1, taking out his teammate Pierre Gasly and Norris and ending all three drivers' races.

After the race, Norris was heavily critical of Colapinto's maneuver. The defending world champion said: "I think the FIA should be more strict and start handing out bans for this kind of stuff. It's just careless when people cost a lot of money. All my parts are in the bin now. So, if people should just get banned. This driving does not deserve to be in F1."

He added: "In Formula 1, I think you expect drivers who anticipate things. No grip's going to be low. No tyre temps are low. They weren't even that low. Just, I mean, in Formula 1, you want to be against the best drivers in the world when stuff like this happens just because. It shouldn't be there."

Following Norris' verdict, Argentinian fans swarmed his social media posts to criticise the driver. Pablo Quirno, Argentina's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, also made a post reacting to the Briton's words.

"Sure, Lando Norris called for a penalty for the driver who crashed into Oscar Piastri in Montreal in 2025. Ah, no… right," he wrote on social media, referring to the McLaren driver's incident with his teammate.

It is not the first incident involving Argentinian fans this weekend. Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Flavio Briatore said that Colapinto would no longer speak to the country's media if fans continued to attack his teammate, Gasly.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: "If the Argentinians want to support Franco, they (have to) support Franco clean, loyal, not what I see on social media. If not, at one point Franco will stop talking with everybody, because if I see every time we have a lot of anger from the fans, and this and that, for no reason, if the people are like that then we will stop the interviews with the Argentinian television, we will stop everything, because it doesn’t make sense what I’m reading on social media."
