Fernando Alonso will be able to take part in the Young Driver Test next week after the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, which is of course part of his preparations for 2021. However, the name of the test indicates that it is for young drivers, so the permission given to Renault and Alonso by the FIA is somewhat remarkable. However, the situation becomes stranger now that Ferrari have asked for similar permission for Carlos Sainz, but that has been rejected.

No consent

Carlos Sainz, who will be driving for Ferrari next year, would like to take part in the Young Driver Test to get used to his new car. As Renault was given permission for Alonso, Ferrari saw its chance, but they did not receive the desired response from the FIA. The result is a confusing situation and the driver does not understand a thing.

Sainz said to Crash.net today in Abu Dhabi when asked: "There hasn't been any logic explained to me. Because first of all, I think there's very little logic behind it. And I think not many people really understand what's going on. Of course, I'm disappointed not being able to test, but I have to accept it, and turn the page."

Participation not just because of driving

"I will make sure I'm prepared as much as I can be for next year", which he now has to do with the winter test in February. Sainz is of the opinion that one should be a bit more flexible about the upcoming test. "The logical thing would have been to open a bit the hand, to some or to all of the drivers who wanted to take part in the Abu Dhabi test."

Sainz also points out that it's not just about driving. It's also about climbing in and out of the car, the safety procedures, how comfortable the driver is and more are important parts. On the basis of the test, these things can already be tackled in preparation. By the way, Sainz is not the only one making this noise, Sebastian Vettel said earlier that he does not understand the decision either, because it is simply unfair.
