The Russian Grand Prix was won by Valtteri Bottas, who was mainly punished by Lewis Hamilton. Kees van de Grint and Allard Kalff do not understand that Hamilton and Mercedes make such a mistake.

The mistakes of Mercedes

The weekend in Sochi already went wrong for Hamilton in qualifying, where he was unable to complete his time on the yellow belt in Q2 due to a red flag from Sebastian Vettel. Before that he had already ruined a lap by going over the track limits and eventually had to qualify on the red tyre. In addition to this strategic bad luck, however, things went wrong again on Sunday.

Before the race Hamilton, with the approval of his team, made two test starts in a place where it was not allowed. ''As such a good driver and multiple world champion, how can you make a test start in the wrong place? I just don't understand that'', says Allard Kalff at RTL GP Slipstream.

The whining of Hamilton

''It is clear that Lewis has not read the rules adapted for this circuit and it is a mistake for the sports director not to have passed this on. Punishment was justified, however, and it is also strange that those penalty points have been taken back. Just accept that, as Daniel Ricciardo did very well'', adds Kees van de Grint.

However, the former tyre expert does see hairline cracks in the mighty stronghold of Mercedes. ''Such a moment does show that Mercedes and Lewis are not perfect. At Hamilton I do have something like that, you'll soon become a seven-time world champion and win almost everything, so don't come up with that nagging attitude every time'', concludes Van de Grint.
