Button hopes for a strong Renault: "We all want to see Alonso at the front"

Fernando Alonso will return to Renault next year in Formula 1. He will occupy the vacant seat of Daniel Ricciardo and with that Esteban Ocon will have a double world champion next to him. For Jenson Button, who used to be the team mate of the Spaniard, the return of Alonso is good news!

Fernando Alonso became world champion twice with Renault and with his return the circle is round again. However, in recent years Renault has not proved to be competitive enough to compete effectively for the championship. With a view to 2022, when a lot will change in the regulations, there should be new opportunities. Alonso could even become champion in the right circumstances.

Button estimates the future Renault situation in combination with Alonso in any case very positive. In an interview with his Sky Sports F1 colleagues Button says: "I think it is possible for someone like Fernando, I really believe that. The man breathes and lives motorsport. During his break of Formula 1 he has not been idle. He has crowned himself endurance world champion and managed to take two victories at the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans."

Button firmly believes in Alonso's qualities as a driver, but like any other driver, the Spaniard is completely dependent on the material he has at his disposal. In this context, Button hopes that Alonso will help the team to get back on its feet so that they can fight for the championship in 2022.

"He's still at the top of his game and it's great to see a two-time champion return to Formula 1. We don't know yet how the Renault will perform, but you have to congratulate the team for getting him back. I hope he will help the team next year so that they are back at the top in 2022 under the new rules."
