The fall from the top Fernando Alonso suffered in the latter part of his career was a sad one for any F1 fan and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has compared his team’s current place to Alonso.

Alonso won two world titles in Formula 1 in 2005 and 2006 at Renault before a spell at Ferrari and finishing his career at McLaren where he was affected by reliability issues throughout his time there.

The Spaniard announced his retirement from F1 in 2018 after failing to keep up with the front runners in the last few years.

Pochettino who is a big F1 fan said: “When you work in football, it's because you want to win.

"You can be a winner but if you don't have the tools to win, it's difficult.

“If you have the car to win and you are good, then you win.”

Alonso was considered one of the best drivers on the grid despite being one of the oldest and Pochettino believes it was largely down to the car.

"If you have the same car as another who is good, then one is going to win and the other is going to lose," added the Argentinian.

“Take the example of Fernando Alonso and compare with Hamilton.

“If you put Hamilton in McLaren last season and Alonso in Mercedes, it's the same result: Hamilton at the bottom and Alonso at the top."
