Carlos Sainz is “eager to start” tests in McLaren’s 2019 car in Barcelona, according to his father Carlos Sainz Sr.

Sainz moved to McLaren from the Renault factory team to replace Fernando Alonso after he chose to retire from Formula 1 last year.

Sainz Sr said to El Mundo Deportivo “Carlos is very excited, very eager to start the tests here in Barcelona,” GrandPX.news.

McLaren has endured some tough season since their partnership using Mercedes engines ended. They brought Honda in as engine suppliers and struggled from the go with engine problems, pushing them further down the field.

In 2017 McLaren announced that they would be ditching Honda in favour of Renault for 2018. They showed promise at the start of the season and ended the constructors’ championship sixth, hoping to improve this year.

“I think that by the time the Barcelona tests are over, they will know fairly well where they are.”

“From there it will be known more or less if McLaren has done its homework well, whether Renault has done its homework well and the engine goes a little better, and if the chassis is better than it was last year with Fernando.”

“Maybe he’ll do 11th or 13th places like Fernando did last year, or maybe it will be points and it’s a super result,” he added.

“But I see a Carlos who is very motivated, very excited and eager to start.”
