Brown aims for US growth

McLaren boss Zak Brown has revealed McLaren’s intentions to use Indianapolis 500 as a springboard to increase the team's global appeal.

Fernando Alonso raced the IndyCar race in 2017 as part of his bid to become a triple crown winner whilst driving for McLaren and will return for another shot in 2019.

The Spaniard finished 29th on his debut and greatly enhanced his profile in the US and Brown is hoping the same can work for McLaren.

"I think North America remains a key market for the growth of Formula 1, the largest sports market in the world, and I think the Circus has plenty of room to make a growth.” Said Brown.

“The goal they (Liberty Media) want to achieve is to be able to organize a second Grand Prix in the United States, but it is clear that it will take time.”

Brown has set his sights on picking up several sponsors through the Indianapolis 500.

"This is why we will participate in the Indy 500 because we assume that the IndyCar series is an important theatre for at least seven out of ten sponsors and at the moment Formula 1 cannot touch those strings.” Added the American.
