Brundle expects Alonso to make F1-comeback "at some point"

Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle expects retiring driver Fernando Alonso to make a comeback to Formula 1 at some point, given that he would be offered a seat in a more competitive car.

Alonso's growing frustrations at McLaren since he re-signed there in 2015 have been very public. The two-time champion is a dogged racer, a real fighter, and when things aren't going right, he'll call you out on it.

As McLaren dropped off more and more in recent years, the now 37-year-old grew unhappier. He started competing in other race classes on the side, racing at events like the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (which he won). His degrading interest in F1 eventually led him to the choice to retire. He drove his last race on Sunday, finishing 11th in Abu Dhabi.

"His incredible send-off over the weekend was like something I have never witnessed," Brundle wrote in his column on Sky Sports F1.

"Wall to wall 'farewell Fernando' which even the tough man himself seemed to be a little emotional about. The last thing I expected on the grid after interviewing him was a man hug!

"He may be 37 but I still expect him back on the F1 grid at some point if there's a suitable car. The whole celebration confused me in a way. If he's so popular, impressive and important, which he is, then why don't we have a competitive car for him?"

A good point. Will anyone offer him that competitive car?
