Is Red Bull considering a new driver? 'Unfortunately he is tied'

Sergio Perez certainly did himself no favours during qualifying for the British Grand Prix. The Mexican exited as early as Q1, ending the day in 16th position. Rumours are growing that Red Bull Racing are considering replacing Perez as Max Verstappen's teammate. An old acquaintance is now considered strong enough by the Austrian team to fill the seat.

Whereas Perez was able to get out of his car after Q1, it was Alexander Albon who managed to get through to Q3, to everyone's surprise. During the free practice sessions, it was already clear that the British-Thai driver was very competitive with his Williams. Each time, he managed to finish in the top three. In qualifying, he was unable to do so, but an eighth place on the grid is a major achievement for the modest Williams.

Albon has matured after Red Bull adventure

This is not the first time this season that Albon has impressed. The British-Thai driver has matured and is showing that a seat at a top team would not be out of place. In the early years of his F1 career, he already drove at the top once, with Red Bull Racing. That adventure came too soon. Meanwhile, everything seems different. Just when Perez is thus disappointing, Albon seems ready in terms of level to replace him.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull Racing's advisor, has also seen how Albon profiles. "I think Albon is doing great," Marko told Austrian broadcaster ORF before qualifying. The advisor did point out that, in his view, the Williams has become a fine car with which appealing results are possible.

Nevertheless, Albon is on Marko's mind. Indeed, the Austrian said: "He is unfortunately tied to Williams until the end of 2025", implying that Albon might be an option for Red Bull.
