Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes that backmarkers should have a more clear understanding of what is going on around them as the fallout continues from the Singapore Grand Prix.

Following Lewis Hamilton's win on Sunday, the Brit said that his "hairs stood up" following an incident where he was trying to lap and overtake Romain Grosjean, but the Haas driver refused to make way for the Mercedes man.

Hamilton consequently lost nearly four seconds to second-placed Max Verstappen but some good sportsmanship from the Dutchman proved pivotal to Hamilton's victory.

Wolff insisted that he appreciates drivers at the back, who have their own race to drive, but believes they should have a better understanding of what is going on around them, so they don't interfere too much with the front-runners.

"The first moment obviously you're angry that you have lost the gap," Wolff said. "But you need to accept that these guys are fighting for position and trying to have their own best race. And we have to respect it.

"I think the drivers need to discuss this among themselves," Wolff added. "That if the leaders come, and it's close, that maybe they should have more of a global perspective what's happening behind them.

"I think that in a racing car sometimes you don't know what's happening and just see that the leader is coming and you're fighting for your own position. You have to respect everybody's struggle to perform."
