After 21 weekends of racing, we've reached the end of the line for the 2019 season; there still was plenty to race for out in Abu Dhabi, with third and sixth place being up for grabs - here's how it ended up.
2019 proved to be Lewis Hamilton's most successful season ever in
Formula 1, winning 11 races while scoring 413 points on his way to a sixth championship. With four other drivers winning races, it has been a relatively challenging season for the Brit, although the title never really looked in doubt for the bulk of the season.
The three drivers behind Hamilton also all had personal best seasons, with Valtteri Bottas winning four races,
Max Verstappen winning three and Charles Leclerc winning two.
Leclerc and Verstappen were still fighting for third place in Abu Dhabi, but the Dutchman pulled it out after finishing second while the Ferrari driver had to make do with third place.
The other fight that still needed settling was for sixth place, which was a three-way fight between Pierre Gasly,
Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon. The latter needed to finish at least fourth to even stand a chance, and he couldn't manage that as he crossed the line in sixth. Gasly scored no points due to an early contact with Lance Stroll where he lost his front wing, meaning Sainz' P10 was enough for him to secure P6 in the championship. It's the first time in five years someone not driving for Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull has cracked the top six, underlining just how good of a season it's been for both Sainz and his team
McLaren.
