British racing driver Callum Ilott has been the victim of multiple death threats in recent days following an incident during the Indycar race at Long Beach. The former Formula 2 vice-world champion made himself heard in an emotional Twitter account.

Things went wrong after an ill-timed pit stop by his team: Juncos Hollinger Racing. Ilott ended up in front of his leading teammate Agustin Canapino after his pit stop, leaving the Argentinian stuck and able to charge moments later, resulting in a crash. It earned the Ferrari protégé, who has also driven several free practice sessions in Formula 1, a torrent of hate reactions, something that did not leave him cold.

'Respect has to come from both sides'

"t’s an important reminder to all new and old fans/people. Respect goes both ways. Although I have thick skin and am used to this behaviour occasionally. One day it will go too far to someone who can’t deal with it as well as others", the 24-year-old Ilott wrote on his twitter.

Verstappen has also faced threats

Ilott's story will be a recognisable one for many drivers. Since the rise of social media, hate reactions and threats are almost a daily occurrence in the racing world. For instance, Max Verstappen has also made light of what he calls "keyboard warriors" in the past. After last year's Brazilian Grand Prix, when the Dutchman refused to cede his place to teammate Sergio Perez, the world champion faced hate reactions. His family was even threatened.
