Jenson Button thinks Fernando Alonso should move on to other projects than Formula One.

Button, who raced with Alonso at McLaren, believes the Spaniard is still enjoying the sport, but thinks it would be better if he turned his attention elsewhere.

The former world champion said this in an interview with Sky Sports:

"He's clearly still enjoying it, but as a double world champion, finishing ninth and being happy is not really something you want to get used to."

Alonso qualified in 13th at Silverstone, but was two seconds shy of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes - who set the best lap time.

That's the reality nowadays for Alonso in F1; the gap between McLaren and the top teams is too much for the Spaniard to ever compete again.

Alonso is completely dominating when it comes to his team mate, Stoffel Vandoorne.

Vandoorne still hasn't out qualified Alonso this season.

Button thinks that Alonso must be really frustrated with his team and the longer it goes on, the less likely Alonso can be contained.

"I don't know what he's going to do next year," Button admitted.

"But I think they need a big turnaround and he has to have great belief in them to succeed next year, or he's going to go.

"I know how frustrated he is, I can hear it on the radio.

"He's got ambitions to win the Indy 500 and do the 'Triple Crown' and for me, I feel that's a good option for him next year.

"From a drivers' point of view who's got experience for this, he's got to do something else," Button said after explaining that he stayed in the sport a year more than he should have.
