For Ferrari, it was a weekend to quickly forget. Carlos Sainz finished fifth, almost a minute behind race winner Max Verstappen. Charles Leclerc was even 68 seconds short of the winning Red Bull Racing driver. The F1-75 was almost a second a lap too slow. Mattia Binotto watched with suspicion.

"At the moment, we don't have many statements. It was a difficult weekend in qualifying, even more so today. What we saw happen on Saturday happened again today [Sunday]. It was a difficult race for us, we have a lot to analyse. It's obviously not what we want to see on the track, but these races will help us understand the limits and what we need to focus on," Binotto was quoted by Sky Italia afterwards.

Like Red Bull Racing, Sainz and Leclerc were sent off on the red tyre in Mexico. "But whether we chose mediums or hard tyres: it wouldn't have changed anything. We didn't have the speed. What was the problem? We certainly didn't prepare well, but we didn't fall short in one specific area. We had problems all weekend with the power unit, but also with the car, I think we lacked traction and balance," he says.

New engine Sainz?

According to Binotto, there is no single answer to Ferrari's problems and they will have to be analysed carefully in the coming days. In Brazil, Sainz may get the same engine specification as Leclerc. The Monegasque switched to a new, more reliable power unit in the United States. Binotto: " I don't rule it out."
