In recent years, the Formula 1 grid has undergone a major rejuvenation. With Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, George Russell and Charles Leclerc the bigger teams have employed drivers that have their best years ahead of them. Good for the sport, bad for the talents from other classes who are knocking on the door.

Super talent

With every passing year, it seems to become more and more difficult for talented drivers to win a seat in Formula 1. The only rookie to join Alfa Romeo next season is Guanyu Zhou. The Chinese driver raced three seasons in Formula 2 and regularly achieved good results. Alfa Romeo never made a secret of the fact that the many sponsorship money and marketing technical reasons played a part in the hiring of Zhou.

Oscar Piastri is a super talent. The Australian won titles in Eurocup Formula Renault, Formula 3 and Formula 2. But Piastri, who is under contract at Alpine, has no place at the highest level. "It is and remains certainly difficult (to move up)," said Giedo van der Garde in conversation with GPblog.

Still hope?

"I still think Piastri deserves to get a seat in a Formula One car. Only, there is someone in front of him and he has a bit more money. Then you quickly have that he gets the seat. I don't think the guy is so wrong at all, but Piastri has really shown that he deserves that seat. But that guy is still young."

According to Van der Garde, Piastri doesn't have to worry that he won't make it to F1. "One hundred percent sure he will drive in Formula 1. He's just a top talent. The guy is f*cking good. And I really expect him to be in Formula 1 within the next two years," said Van der Garde.
