MotoGP’s brutal 2027 rule change could end iconic Marquez-style moments forever

Another proposed rule change could hit MotoGP in 2027 and this could arguably be the one of the most dramatic yet. So far, the sport is already set to undergo its biggest regulation overhaul since 1949.
The 2027 MotoGP regulations will mark a significant shift from their current state, with adjustments made to engine capacities, fuel types, reduced aero and more, but it's not just the technical details of the bikes which are coming under the scrutiny of MotoGP Sports Entertainent Group.
In a bid to cut costs for the teams, the idea of getting rid of spare bikes is being proposed, according to various sources. This would, of course, make a huge difference when it comes to strategies and management throughout race weekends.

One big wreck on a Friday practice session could potentially ruin an entire weekend for an unlucky rider, and we will never see anything like the drama of Marc Marquez crashing out, only to run back to the pits and steal away pole position at the last moment, as he did in COTA 2015.

Another huge problem with the proposal is wet weather racing. As things currently stand under flag-to-flag rules, riders are allowed to come into the pits and switch bikes if the weather conditions change. However, under the new format, riders would have to come in for endurance-style pitstops, which typically take around 15-20 seconds on a MotoGP bike.

Wildcards Scrapped With Immediate Effect

The proposal is just the latest in a long-list of regulations expected to take effect in 2027. Among the other significant developments is the plan to scrap wildcards in favour of an F1-style 'reserve rider' system, though teams and riders alike have already expressed contempt for this idea.
Since Liberty Media's majority acquisition of MotoGP in 2025, they have certainly been keen to leave their mark, and not shy of causing backlash from long-term fans, particularly when it comes to the removal of the iconic Phillip Island circuit from the MotoGP calendar.
