Lance Stroll issued ‘hats off’ praise for Max Verstappen after the Dutchman’s Nurburgring 24 Hours appearance, despite the four-time world champion ultimately falling short of securing victory.
While the focus has now shifted back to Formula 1 and the fifth round of the 2026 season at Montréal’s iconic Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, there was still plenty of discussion during Thursday’s media day about Verstappen’s near-miracle at the Nürburgring. The four-time world champion came close to winning his first-ever 24-hour race before a late mechanical failure brought both his charge and Team Verstappen Racing’s hopes to an end.

Stroll left impressed by Verstappen’s Nürburgring 24H performance

Speaking ahead of his home race weekend in Montréal, Stroll praised Verstappen’s performance at the 24 Hours, admitting he was impressed by both the Dutchman’s speed and bravery throughout the event. Although he did not follow the entire race, the Canadian revealed he watched several highlights and was particularly struck by some of Verstappen’s aggressive overtakes during the night, as well as the pace he consistently showed whenever he was behind the wheel.

“I didn’t watch the whole 24 hours. In fact, I saw some highlights and for sure, hats off. He’s so talented and so fast and so brave. I saw he was making some crazy moves in the middle of the night and was super quick behind the wheel whenever he was behind the wheel.

Stroll, who also recently took part in a GT race at Paul Ricard himself, went on to explain how much he enjoys driving different kinds of machinery away from Formula 1. The Canadian revealed he owns a GT3 car for track days and fun outings, and said that during the recent six-week break he and a group of friends entered a race together simply to enjoy the experience.
“It’s fun. I think when we have breaks, I have a GT3 car for track days and stuff, just for fun. And when we had that six weeks off, I got some friends together, put the car in the race and we got out there and had some fun. So, it’s always cool driving different things. He was good. It was fun to watch.”

Hamilton 'would love to' take on Verstappen-style Nurburgring outing

Verstappen’s appearance at the Nürburgring inevitably became one of the major talking points in Montréal as Formula 1 heads into its fifth race weekend of the 2026 season. Several drivers were asked whether they had followed the Dutchman’s GT outing at the Nordschleife, with the seven-time world champion among those questioned about the possibility of one day attempting a similar challenge himself.
Speaking in Canada, the Ferrari driver admitted the idea of racing at the legendary German circuit is one he finds extremely appealing. While making clear that no concrete plans are currently in place, he revealed he has long been fascinated by the Nordschleife and would love the opportunity to experience it behind the wheel at some point in the future.
The Briton also highlighted the unique atmosphere surrounding endurance and GT racing at the Nürburgring, praising both the spectacle on track and the challenge posed by one of the most iconic and demanding circuits in the world. At the same time, however, he stopped short of suggesting such an appearance is something he actively needs to pursue, instead presenting it more as a personal ambition that could potentially happen one day if the circumstances were right.
“There’s definitely a part of me… I mean, I love the Nordschleife, so I would love to drive a car around there at some stage. The racing looks fantastic. But I don’t know. Could do, don’t need to.”
