MotoGP championship contender Marco Bezzecchi was taken from the Sachsenring circuit in an ambulance following a nasty highside crash during qualifying. The Italian rider, who has led the championship standings for the majority of the season so far, appeared to be in a lot of pain and could be seen holding his wrist after the 90+mph crash.
Bezzecchi, whose physical condition was already less than ideal heading into the weekend, isn't typically one to spend a lot of time on the sidelines, but if any fracture or break is detected by paramedics, it is a very real possibility that he could be forced to withdraw from the sprint this afternoon.
UPDATE: Statement from Aprilia
Following the crash, Marco Bezzecchi was taken to the circuit medical center where, under the supervision of MotoGP Medical Director Dr. Angel Charte, he underwent an X-ray examination which revealed a complete and displaced fracture of the left clavicle. The type of fracture requires surgical intervention for optimal recovery and it will be performed by Dr. Giuseppe Porcellini in Italy. Marco Bezzecchi is planning to return to Italy as soon as possible. We will keep you updated.
