Home hero Max Verstappen could only maintain sixth, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli was in damage limitation mode in fourth.
When the cars crossed the finish line rain poured down, and we'll be keeping an eye out with more anticipated on Saturday.

Tale of the tape

Verstappen arrived at his home race, the last at Zandvoort, with a new contract extension, after Thursday's bombshell announcement that the Dutchman will be staying at Red Bull until 2030. Red Bull have also had to make changes to their lineup this weekend, with Liam Lawson filling in for the injured Isack Hadjar, while Yuki Tsunoda returns to sister team Racing Bulls.

Upon F1's return, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli led the Drivers' standings by 50 points ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, while his Mercedes teammate George Russell was a further nine points behind in P3. Despite reliability concerns, Mercedes restart the 2026 campaign in a strong position in the Constructors', ahead of challengers Ferrari. However, third-placed McLaren could be in the process of another remarkable mid-season turnaround after Lando Norris' dominant victory last time out in Hungary.
There is also the distinct possibility that drivers face wet weather conditions for the first time in the 2026 cars this weekend. FP1 and SQ1 took place on a drying track and eyes will be on the sky for much of Saturday.
