Ferrari emerged from the Sprint race at Zandvoort with encouraging signs for Sunday, as Charles Leclerc appeared to have the strongest race pace among the frontrunners. The Monegasque not only managed to overtake Lando Norris on a circuit where passing is notoriously difficult, but also showed impressive tyre management despite running the soft compound.

Leclerc and Ferrari set the benchmark

Leclerc spent a significant part of the Sprint tucked up behind Norris but eventually found a way past the McLaren on lap 18, completing the move at Turn 1. Even after spending several laps in traffic, the Ferrari driver recorded the best average race pace of the field.
That performance becomes even more notable when taking tyre degradation into account. Leclerc completed the Sprint on the soft tyre, the compound expected to suffer the greatest drop-off, yet lost only eight tenths from the beginning to the end of the stint. His combination of outright speed and tyre management suggests Ferrari had significant potential over a race distance.
With Leclerc having been held up behind Norris for much of the race, there is also an argument that Ferrari's true pace was not fully reflected by the final result. Once in clear air, the data indicated that the SF-26 had the performance to be a major factor, offering Ferrari plenty of encouragement ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix.

Verstappen shows improved race pace

Max Verstappen also showed signs of improvement after Red Bull's difficult Friday. The four-time world champion initially struggled to keep up and had Lewis Hamilton close behind, but his pace improved as the Sprint progressed and he eventually closed back onto Oscar Piastri.
Verstappen averaged a 1:16.293 across the 24 completed laps, only marginally slower than Piastri ahead. His tyre degradation was also more encouraging, with Verstappen losing around three tenths less than the McLaren driver across the long stint on the medium compound.
Hamilton was the only leading driver to show less degradation than Verstappen, although the Ferrari driver was not pushing at the limit throughout. After initially trying to attack Verstappen, Hamilton was unable to find a way through and settled into position for the remainder of the race.
While Red Bull therefore has some positives to take from its long-run performance, Ferrari's pace was the standout from the Sprint. The picture could still change before qualifying, however, with Parc Fermé restrictions lifted and teams once again able to make changes to their cars. Qualifying later on Saturday will provide the first indication of whether Ferrari can translate its impressive race pace into an advantage over a single lap.
