With the Monaco Grand Prix in the books, the paddock now looks to the last leg of the triple header, the Spanish Grand Prix. After his penalty on Saturday, Hamilton was forced to start the race in P7, then, having jumped two cars in the strategy game during the race, the gap to the front runners, was substantial (51 seconds at the flag).
Hamilton asked his engineer if the gap to the leaders was over a minute long. Although his race engineer did reply, he did not answer the seven-time world champions question, to which Hamilton reacted annoyed: "You’re not answering the question. It doesn’t really matter I guess, I’m just asking if I’m a minute behind or not.”
After the race came to an end, Hamilton, perhaps prompted by Adami's silence, asked: “Are you upset with me or something?” The silence, however, remained.
The Dutchman driver led for a long time, but ultimately, was unable to make any moves at the Monaco Grand Prix, finishing in the same position he started in.
The mandatory pitstop rule enforced by the FIA to enhance the entertainment was not to Verstappen's liking:
"You can't race here anyway, so it doesn't matter what you do. One stop, ten stops. Yeah, you just… I mean, even at the end, I was in the lead, but my tyres were completely gone, and you still can't pass. I think nowadays, with an F1 car, you can just pass a Formula 2 car around here," he said to
Sky Sports.
The efforts put forward by the FIA and
F1 to make the race in Monaco more exciting were met with sarcasm by Verstappen: "
I don't know. But then, honestly, we were almost doing Mario Kart, and then we would have to install bits on the car. Maybe you could throw bananas around. I don't know slippery surface or something!"
